Tripura Assembly Elections: BJP Wins 32 Of The State’s 60 Seats

The ruling Party(BJP) wins 32 seats in the Tripura assembly, crossing the halfway mark in the 60-member house on its own, despite the fact that its ally, the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura, could only win from one constituency.

The debutant Tipra Motha party of royal scion Pradyot Bikram Manikya Deb Barman has had an important impact, winning 13 seats and finishing second to the BJP, whose seat count has decreased from 36 to 13 in five years.

BJP wins

Despite a three-seat pact with the Congress, the CPI-M, which has been the main opposition party since 2018 and ruled the state for 25 years prior to that, could only win 11 seats, compared to 16 the previous time. The Congress had drawn a blank in 2018.

The Trinamool Congress fielded 28 candidates and heavily campaigned in the run-up to the elections, but it did not open an account in Tripura.

The BJP replaced Biplab Kumar Deb as chief minister in May of last year with Manik Saha. This was interpreted as a move to counteract any anti-incumbency forces.

Chief Minister Saha, who was elected from the Town Bardowali constituency, likened his victory to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and stated that the people had rejected the Congress and Left parties. Saha stated: “However, we expected to win more seats. We’ll conduct post-poll analysis.”

He stated that the date for the swearing-in ceremony will be determined after consultation with the central leadership.

Tripura Elections: Tripura is conducting its three-cornered fight in the election polls today i.e. on Thursday, with the CPI(M)-Congress combine and the Tipra Motha challenging the incumbent’s BJP’s bid to retain power.

Voting for the 60 Assembly seats of Tripura has already begun. The fate of 259 candidates hangs in the balance. The counting of votes will take place on March 2.

Taking notes from the 2018 elections, the BJP had stormed to power with 36 seats, half of which were won from the tribal areas. The BJP had secured a 43.59 per cent vote share in 2018 compared to CPI(M)’s 42.22 per cent vote and 2 per cent of the Congress, with most of BJP’s gain at Congress’s expense.
