Indian equity benchmarks Sensex and Nifty recovered sharply towards the close on Monday, cutting most of their earlier losses to finish on a subdued note.

The Nifty 50 edged up by 6.45 points, or 0.03 per cent, to settle at 23,649.95, while the BSE Sensex advanced 77.05 points, or 0.10 per cent, to close at 75,315.04.

Both indices had spent the majority of the session in the red before witnessing a late rebound.

According to market experts, the 23,700 mark has now become an immediate hurdle for the Nifty.

A decisive move above this level may accelerate gains towards the 23,900–24,000 band. The 23,300 zone, meanwhile, continues to serve as a strong support level, limiting downside risks.

The recovery was primarily fuelled by robust buying in information technology stocks. Leading gainers on the Nifty included Tech Mahindra, Infosys, and Bharti Airtel. The Nifty IT index climbed more than 2 per cent, emerging as the top-performing sector of the day.

Investors gravitated towards defensive pockets of the market amid prevailing uncertainty. The Nifty Pharma and Healthcare indices closed in positive territory, reflecting demand for relatively stable sectors during volatile phases.

In contrast, the broader market showed signs of weakness. The Nifty MidCap index declined by 0.15 per cent, while the Nifty SmallCap index fell 1.26 per cent, indicating sustained selling pressure in smaller stocks.

Traders remained wary as they closely tracked geopolitical developments in West Asia and their possible implications for global financial markets and crude oil prices. This cautious sentiment weighed on overall market participation.

Market analysts advised a cautious approach, highlighting the importance of risk management in the current environment.

With uncertainty surrounding global factors still unresolved, markets will likely remain volatile in the near term.
