On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi honoured Dr Rajendra Prasad, India’s first President, on his birth anniversary, recognising his enduring contributions to the nation and the values he embodied.
Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Tributes to Dr. Rajendra Prasad Ji on his birth anniversary. From being an active participant in India’s freedom struggle, presiding over the Constituent Assembly to becoming our first President, he served our nation with unmatched dignity, dedication and clarity of purpose. His long years in public life were marked by simplicity, courage and devotion to national unity. His exemplary service and vision continue to inspire generations.”

Rajendra Prasad, born on 3 December 1884 in Ziradei, Bihar, led India through its formative years as President from 26 January 1950 until 13 May 1962.
He earned widespread admiration in the freedom movement for his modesty, sharp intellect and unwavering commitment to public service.
After independence, Prasad took on the crucial role of President of the Constituent Assembly, steering the drafting of India’s Constitution. He additionally headed the assembly’s food and agriculture committee, contributing to early policy thinking in key sectors.
Elected as the nation’s first President when the Constitution came into effect in 1950, Prasad became known for maintaining a non-partisan, restrained and principled approach to the office.
Archival records underline his preference for a simple lifestyle and his deep dedication to nation-building.
Prasad served two consecutive terms before withdrawing from active politics. He spent his later years at Sadaqat Ashram in Patna, where he died on 28 February 1963.
His legacy remains central to the story of India’s early republic and its democratic evolution.
