Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited’s (BSNL) indigenously developed 4G mobile network from Jharsuguda, Odisha, marking a major milestone in India’s push for technological self-reliance.
The launch, aligned with BSNL’s 25th anniversary, activated more than 92,000 domestically built 4G towers across the country.
The rollout will deliver 4,000 towers to Gujarat, with over 600 specifically deployed to serve remote, tribal, and hilly areas.
State Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel joined the national event virtually from Gandhinagar’s Mahatma Mandir, accompanied by Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya.
Referring to the launch as a timely offering during the festive period of Navratri and Diwali, Patel called it ‘a gift from the Prime Minister to the nation’.
He stated, “At a time when the nation is worshipping Adi Shakti, the introduction of this indigenous 4G network is a symbol of Atmanirbhar Bharat.”
Shift from Market to Maker
Emphasising the country’s broader progress, the Chief Minister noted India’s transition from being a telecom market to a global provider of technological solutions.
“This is not just ‘Made in India for India’, it is now ‘Made in India, Made for the World’,” he said.
This infrastructure will directly benefit more than 11,000 villages across Gujarat, improving connectivity in underserved regions.
Union Minister Mandaviya described the development as a proud moment for the nation.
He likened the achievement to India’s success in vaccine production during the pandemic, demonstrating how indigenous solutions can tackle global challenges.
Officials confirmed that with this launch, India becomes one of the few countries to have developed its own domestic 4G telecom network. The programme, running under the theme ‘Gaurav se kaho, ye swadeshi hai’ (Say with pride, this is indigenous), featured participation from state leaders, telecom officials, and citizens from across Gujarat.
The 4G saturation project will cover 97,500 new sites nationwide and significantly boost e-governance, education, digital commerce, and healthcare services in rural India, marking a key turning point in the country’s digital journey.
