
A new report reveals that Indian tourists in 2025 are placing culture at the heart of their travel plans.
According to a recent survey, 82% of travellers are selecting destinations based on cultural significance, with younger generations, particularly Millennials and Gen Z, leading this transformation.
84% of Millennials and 80% of Gen Z respondents reportedly prefer trips that immerse them in local heritage, festivals, and traditions rather than just sightseeing.
Festivals have emerged as a key driver of domestic travel. Around 76% of Indians now schedule their holidays around major cultural celebrations.
Durga Puja in Kolkata, Holi in Barsana, and Onam in Kerala are among the most sought-after experiences.
Historic cities such as Jaipur and Varanasi remain top choices for over half of the respondents.
UNESCO World Heritage Sites like Hampi and the Taj Mahal are also attracting increased attention, with Varanasi alone seeing a 76% rise in travel interest this year.
Shift Towards Authentic and Undiscovered Destinations
The report also notes that 93% of travellers are keen to explore lesser-known cultural hubs. These destinations offer authentic traditions, untouched by mass tourism.
This shift reflects a growing desire for meaningful, slower travel that allows deeper engagement with local culture.
While sightseeing remains popular, travellers now seek deeper engagement. 40% are interested in heritage villages or eco-cultural communities, while 38% are exploring India through regional cuisines and local traditions.
The top three planning priorities for Indian tourists are safety (45%), cultural authenticity (33%), and seasonality (31%).
The influence of social media continues to grow, with 45% of travellers drawing inspiration from online platforms.
Friends and family account for 39%, while travel apps influence another 27%.
Additionally, 41% of travellers begin planning their trips one to two months in advance, showing a more thoughtful approach to cultural travel.
