Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has expressed strong support for Ukraine in a phone conversation with President Volodymyr Zelensky, emphasising that only Ukrainians can decide their country’s future.
A statement on the prime minister’s official website said both leaders underscored that no one must alter international borders by force.
Carney reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to Kyiv, noting last week’s joint announcement with the European Union and Britain to lower the price cap on Russian crude oil, a measure aimed at increasing pressure on Moscow.
During the discussion, Carney and Zelensky shared the view that territorial integrity is non-negotiable. They also welcomed ongoing diplomatic initiatives by the United States to pursue peace in Ukraine, though they stressed that any agreement must have Kyiv’s input.
Alaska Meeting Between Trump & Putin Looms
The call came just days before a high-profile meeting scheduled for Friday in Alaska between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump announced the summit last Friday, the same day as his self-imposed deadline for Moscow to agree to a ceasefire or face additional US sanctions.
Speaking about the upcoming talks, Trump revealed that future discussions could include Ukraine’s president or bring both Russian and Ukrainian leaders together.
A White House official confirmed on Saturday that the option of a trilateral summit remains open.
In response to the Alaska summit news, Zelensky warned that any agreements made without Ukraine’s involvement would amount to ‘dead decisions’.
His statement reflected Kyiv’s long-standing position that peace negotiations must include Ukrainian representation to ensure legitimacy and effectiveness.
US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker echoed the possibility of Zelensky attending Friday’s meeting, saying on Sunday that it was still feasible for the Ukrainian president to participate.
The Alaska summit is seen as a critical test of Washington’s ability to broker progress in the conflict. Analysts suggest that while US–Russia dialogue may ease tensions, any perceived sidelining of Ukraine could undermine trust among Kyiv’s allies.
For Canada, the conversation between Carney and Zelensky signals continued alignment with Western partners in supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and resisting Russian aggression.
