In a symbolic gesture of friendship, a large portrait of PM Modi adorned the Maldives’ Defence Ministry in Male.

This is Modi’s third official visit to the island nation and the first by a foreign head of government during President Mohamed Muizzu’s tenure, which began in November 2023.

Despite his earlier ‘India Out’ rhetoric, President Muizzu personally received PM Modi at the airport, along with senior ministers, signalling a reset in bilateral relations.

PM Modi expressed gratitude on social media, stating, “Landed in Malé. Deeply touched by the gesture of President Muizzu to come to the airport to welcome me. I am confident that India-Maldives friendship will scale new heights of progress in the times to come.”

Prime Minister Modi was notably the first world leader to congratulate Muizzu on his electoral victory.

Their interactions since COP28 in Dubai and during Muizzu’s visit to New Delhi in 2024 have laid the groundwork for renewed collaboration.

Analysts note that India’s calm and measured response to previous tensions helped turn the tide.

“India waited quietly, showing strategic maturity. The Maldives realised that in times of need, India is the first responder,” remarked a former diplomat.

The newly inaugurated Ministry of Defence building in Male, Maldives, stands tall as a striking symbol of India-Maldives cooperation.

The facade of the building is adorned with a massive portrait of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, reflecting the significance of his visit and the growing partnership between the two nations.

The modern architecture of the structure blends functionality with symbolism, while the grand display of PM Modi’s image underscores the historic nature of this moment in bilateral relations.

Today, the building serves not just as a centre for defence administration but also as a visual representation of mutual trust and collaboration.

Strengthening Economic & Security Ties

India and the Maldives are now working towards a Free Trade Agreement and an investment treaty. Both leaders reviewed progress on the Joint Vision for a Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership.

Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra stated that the relationship is ‘comprehensive and multifaceted’, underpinned by high-level exchanges and a focus on regional peace and prosperity.

PM Modi will inaugurate several major infrastructure projects, including the flagship Greater Male Connectivity Project, connecting four islands and transforming regional infrastructure.

India is also supporting projects in roads, fisheries, airports, and social housing.

India remains one of the Maldives’ top trading partners, with trade valued at around $500 million.

Ongoing development partnerships include concessional credit lines, grants, and capacity-building programmes.

India continues to assist the Maldives in maritime domain awareness, defence training, and joint naval exercises. Surveillance assets and cooperation through the Colombo Security Conclave further enhance regional security.

The visit reflects India’s enduring commitment to the Maldives under the ‘Neighbourhood First’ and MAHASAGAR visions.

As PM Modi participates in the 60th Independence Day celebrations as the Guest of Honour, the relationship will likely deepen across trade, connectivity, and maritime cooperation, securing mutual interests in the Indian Ocean Region.
