PM Narendra Modi received a heartfelt welcome on Friday as children from the Indian diaspora in the Maldives performed a traditional classical dance during his arrival at the Kurumba Village Resort.
The performance was part of a vibrant cultural reception during his two-day state visit to the island nation.
Young Performers Celebrate a Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience
Dressed in traditional Indian attire, the children showcased their talents through classical dance, representing India’s rich cultural heritage and their emotional bond with the homeland.
“We had practised so hard for this day. I never thought I’d get to see the Prime Minister this close, let alone perform for him,” one student shared with joy. “He smiled and waved at us. I’ll never forget it.”
Another young performer described the moment as surreal. “It felt like a dream. After our performance, he asked security to remove the barricade and came close to us, applauding each one of us. It was such a special moment.”
Parents Moved by PM Modi’s Gesture
Parents and members of the Indian community in the Maldives were visibly emotional during the interaction.
A member of the diaspora expressed gratitude, saying, “The feeling can’t be expressed. I feel blessed and privileged to have met him. He even played with my child. His aura is so powerful and kind—he truly loves children.”
Another woman added, “We had sleepless nights preparing for this day. His presence is so inspiring. It felt like a dream come true for all of us.”
Earlier in the day, PM Modi landed at Velana International Airport, where Maldivian President Dr Mohamed Muizzu received him with full ceremonial honours.
The reception included traditional music and enthusiastic chants of ‘Vande Mataram’.
A Symbolic Visit Strengthening India-Maldives Ties
PM Modi is visiting the Maldives as the Guest of Honour for the nation’s 60th Independence Day celebrations. This marks his third visit to the country and makes him the first head of state or government to visit under President Muizzu’s tenure.
The visit reflects India’s commitment to its ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy, highlighting deepening strategic and cultural ties between the two nations.
