Ahmedabad Air India Flight AI171 Crash: In the wake of the tragic Air India crash in Ahmedabad, a full-scale investigation is now underway.
The government has initiated a detailed probe to determine the causes and consequences of the accident.
Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu arrived at the crash site from Vijayawada and confirmed that the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) will lead the inquiry.
Taking to X, the Minister posted, “Following the tragic incident in Ahmedabad, a formal investigation has been initiated by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), in line with international protocols set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).”
“Additionally, the Government is constituting a high-level committee comprising experts from multiple disciplines to examine the matter in detail. The committee will work to strengthen aviation safety and prevent such incidents in future,” the post read.

The AAIB, under the Ministry of Civil Aviation, is responsible for investigating major aviation incidents in India. Its procedures align with global norms established by the ICAO.
The crash involved a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner operating as Flight AI-171 from Ahmedabad to London. The aircraft crashed shortly after take-off, hitting a residential area near BJ Medical College.
Before the crash, the aircraft had issued a distress signal and then quickly lost altitude.
Investigators are working to recover the cockpit voice and flight data recorders — the aircraft’s black boxes — to analyse the flight’s final moments.
Minister Naidu further stressed that the government’s response goes beyond standard protocol.
A multidisciplinary high-level panel is being formed to explore the wider implications of the crash.
This committee will include aviation safety experts, engineers, air traffic control professionals, and officials from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation.
Its scope includes recommending systemic reforms in safety procedures, emergency response, and aircraft maintenance.
Boeing, the aircraft manufacturer, has offered full support to the investigation. A technical team from Boeing will likely join the efforts, which will also involve international participation as per ICAO rules.
The AAIB has, however, sealed the crash site and begun collecting evidence. This includes mapping the wreckage, analysing terrain impact, and taking witness statements.
While the country grieves, the government’s prompt action reflects a strong commitment to transparency and aviation reform.
The outcomes of this probe will likely influence future policy and restore public trust in air travel.
