Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid tribute to tribal freedom fighter Bhagwan Birsa Munda on his 125th death anniversary, also observed as Balidan Diwas. He called Munda’s life a symbol of courage, sacrifice, tribal welfare, and national pride.
Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Respectful tribute to the great hero of the freedom struggle, Bhagwan Birsa Munda, on his martyrdom day. He dedicated his life to the welfare of tribal brothers and sisters and the protection of their rights. His sacrifice and dedication will continue to inspire the people of the nation forever.”

Birsa Munda led tribal uprising against British rule
Birsa Munda united tribal communities against British oppression in the late 19th century. He was born on 15 November 1875 in Ulihatu village, now in Jharkhand.
Despite limited formal education, he became a strong tribal voice. He resisted British officials, landlords, and missionaries. He also led a socio-religious movement that asserted tribal identity and rights.
Tribal people call him ‘Dharti Aaba’ or ‘Father of the Earth’. He died in British custody at age 25 but left behind a powerful legacy. His resistance still inspires both tribal and non-tribal Indians.
Modi Government honours Munda’s legacy
On 15 November 2024, PM Modi launched the 150th birth anniversary year of Birsa Munda during Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas in Jamui, Bihar. He also unveiled development projects worth over ₹6,640 crore at the event.
The Prime Minister released a commemorative coin and postage stamp in honour of the tribal icon. He said Birsa Munda’s contribution was long ignored after Independence. He called the celebrations a sincere effort to recognise tribal sacrifice and history.
The Modi government declared 15 November as Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas to honour tribal freedom fighters and their role in India’s independence and identity.
