Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the national capital on Saturday to assess the security situation in the Union Territory following the Pahalgam terrorist attack that left 26 civilians, mostly tourists, dead.
This marks Abdullah’s first meeting with the Prime Minister since 22 April, the day terrorists killed unarmed civilians after separating them based on religion at Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam.
Held at the Prime Minister’s residence, the meeting lasted around 30 minutes.
According to sources, both leaders discussed the current situation in the region and reviewed strategies to prevent further incidents.
Though no official statement followed, both leaders emphasised the need to uphold law and order and ensure justice for the victims.
The attack, which took place in a well-known tourist area, has triggered increased security across sensitive zones of Jammu and Kashmir.
Tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated after Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists, reportedly backed by Pakistan, carried out the massacre, killing 25 tourists among the 26 victims at Baisaran.
Widespread national outrage erupted as Prime Minister Modi declared that security forces would relentlessly pursue the terrorists and their sponsors.
The Prime Minister has granted the armed forces complete operational freedom to respond to the attack.
Prior to this decision, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had met with the Prime Minister on Monday for 40 minutes after being briefed by the Chief of Defence Staff on the armed forces’ readiness for any scenario.
As part of ongoing diplomatic and strategic steps against Pakistan, India has halted all postal services with the country.
This comes alongside the closure of the Attari-Wagah border, suspension of the Indus Water Treaty, and expulsion of all Pakistani nationals.
Army Ordered To Use Full Force
In Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha recently held a security review with Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi, where he directed the Army to use full force in pursuing the attackers.
Security forces have also begun demolishing properties linked to terrorists, overground workers (OGWs), and sympathisers as a show of zero tolerance.
On Friday, homes of Adil Hussain Thokar and Asif Sheikh, both members of the LeT group behind the Pahalgam attack, demolished in Tral and Bijbehara. Ten such properties have been destroyed so far.
On Monday, the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly unanimously passed a resolution condemning the attack.
Meanwhile, an extensive search operation using advanced technology continues in the mountainous areas of south Kashmir to track down those responsible.
