Amid escalating violence in Manipur, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Monday decided to send 50 additional companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) to the state. Officials said the deployment aims to manage the deteriorating law and order situation.
A senior Manipur Home Department official stated that around 5,000 CAPF personnel would arrive soon. They will be stationed in militancy-affected and troubled districts.
Previous Deployments and Fresh Arrivals
Last week, the MHA sent 20 CAPF companies, including 15 from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and five from the Border Security Force (BSF). The CRPF units were redirected from Assam, while the BSF teams came from Tripura.
The new deployment includes CRPF, BSF, and other paramilitary forces. They will operate in vulnerable areas with mixed populations and districts heavily affected by militancy.
Home Minister’s Review and Violent Clashes In Manipur
Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the situation on Sunday and called for another high-level meeting on Monday. Shah directed officials to implement stronger measures to curb violence and restore peace.
Meanwhile, clashes between security forces and mobs intensified. In Jiribam, a 21-year-old protester, K. Athouba, was shot dead on Sunday night. Protesters accused the Manipur Police special commando of firing. The mob had been attacking properties of political leaders and party offices, protesting the recent killing of six individuals abducted by militants on November 11.
The violence, which escalated over the weekend, led to attacks on over two dozen properties, including those belonging to ministers, MLAs, and political parties. Educational institutions in curfew-bound districts, including Imphal East, Imphal West, and Thoubal, will remain closed until Tuesday.
Manipur Police confirmed the recovery of six bodies believed to be the three women and three children kidnapped by militants. Investigations into the clashes and abductions are ongoing.
