The Allahabad High Court has postponed the hearing on the criminal appeal of former Samajwadi Party MLA Irfan Solanki, who is currently serving a prison sentence.
The rescheduled date for the proceedings is now 3 October.
The appeal concerns the conviction of Irfan Solanki and his brother Rizwan Solanki, as well as the state government’s request for an increased sentence.
A division bench comprising Justice Rajeev Gupta and Justice Surendra Singh will hear the case.
The state government has challenged the special court’s decision to acquit Solanki in a conspiracy case and is seeking to increase his sentence from seven years to life imprisonment.
This conviction stems from an incident where the Solanki brothers were found guilty of burning down a woman’s house in Kanpur. The original sentence was seven years in prison.
In addition to appealing for a life sentence, the state government has also filed a governmental appeal against the seven-year sentence handed down by the Kanpur court.
The Allahabad High Court has now set a new date for the hearing of these appeals.
Senior advocate Gopal Chaturvedi, advocate Upendra Upadhyay, and the state government’s representatives, Additional Advocate General PC Srivastava and AGA JK Upadhyay, will be presenting their arguments during the upcoming session.
