Efforts to locate over 150 missing individuals from the devastating Wayanad landslide, now in its 14th day, continue as authorities work tirelessly to bring closure to grieving families.
The landslide, which occurred on 30 July, has claimed 416 lives, marking it as the most catastrophic natural disaster in the state’s history.
Authorities anticipate the release of the first set of DNA test results on Monday. They interred the victims in a mass burial at Meppadi village council, laying unidentified bodies and body parts to rest over three days.
The authorities however numbered each grave carefully, allowing survivors to identify their loved ones after confirming DNA matches. They assured survivors that they can conduct any necessary religious rituals after the identification process.
In addition to the search operations, survivors will be able to apply for lost certificates at special counters set up in and around relief camps.
Relief camps across the region currently shelter over 11,000 people.
The government has committed to relocating these individuals from the camps to more permanent homes or accommodations in the area.
As part of this effort, around 250 vacant homes have been identified for allocation to those displaced by the disaster.
To expedite the rehabilitation process, the Pinarayi Vijayan government has deployed additional government officials from various departments to Wayanad. They are sending health officials, especially counselors, to provide support in the affected areas.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Wayanad, during which he extended his stay by three hours, brought a ray of hope to survivors.
During his visit, he met with those affected and visited hospitals, offering assurances that the government would provide all necessary assistance.
PM Modi Pledges Comprehensive Support For Wayanad Landslide Relief
While the Vijayan government has already submitted a preliminary report requesting Rs 2,000 crore in aid, PM Modi, after reviewing a detailed presentation at a special review meeting in Wayanad, has pledged comprehensive support.
He has also urged the state to submit a more detailed report to expedite the assistance process.
Leader of the Opposition, V D Satheesan, has called on the state government to expedite the submission of this report.
