Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday said India had made significant progress in tackling three major internal security challenges — Kashmir, the Northeast and Left-wing extremism — with the affected regions now witnessing peace and creating conditions for development.

Speaking at Police Commemoration Day in New Delhi, Shah said the government had largely curbed terrorism in Kashmir, while agreements and surrenders had helped bring peace to the Northeast.

He also credited the police, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) and CoBRA Battalion with significant progress in the fight against Naxalism.

Shah said these regions, once considered critical internal security hotspots, were now better positioned to compete with the rest of the country in development.

The Home Minister also thanked CAPF personnel deployed along India’s borders and across the country, praising their commitment during elections, festivals, protests and other security operations.

He said their role was vital in protecting national security and ensuring the smooth functioning of democratic processes.

During the event, Shah flagged off a motorcycle rally from the national capital. CRPF Director General Gyanendra Pratap Singh briefed him on the rally.

The Shahid Pushtika Rakshak Toli, a ceremonial police squad responsible for safeguarding and presenting the Martyrs’ Book, also paid tribute to fallen personnel.

Shah set December 31, 2029, as the target for a drug-free India, urging police to support a nationwide campaign.

He said drug abuse harms young people, burdens the economy and funds anti-national organisations.
