Amid escalating demands for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the suspicious death of a female doctor at R G Kar Medical College & Hospital, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has declared her administration’s readiness to cooperate with any central agency investigation.
The death of the doctor has ignited widespread unrest among medical students and hospital staff, who have initiated a cease-work protest.
In response to these developments, Chief Minister Banerjee assured that her government is to facilitate an independent probe if the protesting individuals continue to demand one.
“We have no secrets in this matter,” Banerjee stated.
She stated that they would push for the maximum penalty for the individual in custody, who will face trial in a fast-track court. If students and staff insist on a CBI investigation, the authorities would not oppose it. They expressed confidence in their handling of the case and readiness to allow a central agency to take over if needed.
Banerjee also addressed concerns regarding the hospital’s oversight, promising an inquiry into any potential lapses by the hospital authorities and the functionality of the installed CCTV system, which failed to prevent the incident.
In a bid to mitigate the impact on patients, the Chief Minister however urged the protesting medical personnel to continue caring for patients despite their agitation.
“I understand your concerns and support your demands. However, I urge you to ensure that patient care is not compromised during this period of protest,” WB CM added.
