Rahul Gandhi Visits Assam To Assess Flood Devastation
Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, visited Assam on Monday to assess the flood situation, describing the devastation as heartbreaking.
Gandhi met with a delegation from the Assam Congress, led by state President Bhupen Kumar Borah, who briefed him on the flood’s impact.
In a post on his X handle, Gandhi mention, “The extreme devastation by flooding in Assam is heartbreaking – with innocent children like 8-year-old Avinash is away from us. My heartfelt condolences to all the bereave families across the state.”

Referring to the Assam Congress leaders, he noted that over 60 people had died in the current floods, with more than 53,000 displaced and 2.4 million affected.
“These numbers reflect the gross and grave mismanagement by BJP’s double-engine government, which came to power with the promise of a flood-free Assam,” Gandhi said.
Advocating For Proper Relief
He emphasized the need for a comprehensive and compassionate vision for Assam, advocating for proper relief, rehabilitation, and compensation in the short term, and the establishment of a pan-Northeast water management authority to control floods in the long term.
“I stand with the people of Assam. I am their soldier in Parliament, and I urge the Central government to extend all possible help and support to the state expeditiously,” he added.
Following his visit to Assam, Gandhi traveled to Manipur’s Jiribam district, where recent violence had erupted after the killing of 59-year-old farmer Soibam Saratkumar Singh on June 6. He met with inmates of relief camps in the area.
Congress sources reported that the LoP interacted with those who had sought shelter in the relief camps following the Jiribam violence.
An indefinite curfew was imposed, and a large contingent of central paramilitary forces and state commando battalions was deployed to address the ethnic violence in Jiribam district, a mixed-population area adjacent to southern Assam.
