5.3 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Chamba, Himachal Pradesh; Tremors Felt in Punjab and Haryana

Interestingly, on this day in 1905, the Kangra district in Himachal Pradesh experienced a massive 8-magnitude earthquake, resulting in widespread casualties and destruction.

A 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck the Chamba region of Himachal Pradesh on Thursday, as reported by PTI. According to the National Center for Seismology’s statement on X, the earthquake occurred at 21:34:32 IST with coordinates Lat: 33.09 & Long: 76.59, at a depth of 10 km.

Meteorological department officials in Shimla informed PTI that the tremors, lasting for a few seconds, did not cause any loss of life or property damage. The earthquake, originating at a depth of 10 km, was felt across North India, including Chandigarh, Punjab, and parts of Haryana.

According to records from the National Center for Seismology (NCS), over 20,000 fatalities occurred in the Western Himalayas region as a consequence of this disaster.
