United Kingdom Sanctions Six Officials In Russian Prison Where Alexei Navalny Dead

UK Foreign Minister David Cameron announced Wednesday that London had slapped sanctions on six people in charge of the Siberian prison facility where Russian opposition activist Alexei Navalny died.

“Those responsible for Navalny’s brutal treatment should be under no illusion — we will hold them accountable”, Mr. Cameron warned.

Individuals who have been sanctioned will have their UK assets frozen and travel bans imposed.

They include Vadim Konstantinovich Kalinin, the IK-3 Arctic Penal Colony Polar Wolf supervisor, and five of his deputies.

On Friday, the United Kingdom became the first country to impose penalties in response to Navalny’s death, and it also demanded that his remains be returned to his family without delay.

Mr. Cameron went on to say, “It’s clear that the Russian authorities saw Navalny as a threat and they tried repeatedly to silence him”.

“Russian officials poisoned him with Novichok in 2020, imprisoned him for peaceful political activities, and deported him to an Arctic penal colony. No one should doubt the oppressive nature of the Russian system”, Mr. Cameron continued.

“That’s why we’re today sanctioning the most senior prison officials responsible for his custody in the penal colony where he spent his final months”, he concluded.
