India has formally raised concerns with the US Embassy in New Delhi after a viral video showed an Indian student being handcuffed and restrained at Newark Airport in New Jersey.
Government sources confirmed on Tuesday that officials have contacted US authorities to ascertain the facts.
“Our Embassy in Washington DC and the Indian Consulate in New York are in touch with the US authorities. We have not yet received specific details about the incident, including the student’s travel status or destination. We are continuing to follow up,” said an official from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
Entrepreneur shares shocking account
The video, shared by an Indo-American entrepreneur, triggered outrage across social media. He claimed that the Indian student deported was pinned to the ground and treated like a criminal.
“I witnessed a young Indian student being deported from Newark Airport last night— handcuffed, crying, treated like a criminal. He came chasing dreams, not causing harm. As an NRI, I felt helpless and heartbroken. This is a human tragedy,” he posted on X.

Taking to X, the Indian Consulate General in New York responded, “We have come across social media posts claiming that an Indian national is facing difficulties at Newark Liberty International Airport. We are in touch with local authorities in this regard. The Consulate remains ever committed for the welfare of Indian Nationals.”

US issues warning against visa abuse
Reacting to the controversy, the US Embassy in India issued a stern message.
“There is no right to visit the United States. We cannot and will not tolerate illegal entry, abuse of visas, or violation of US law,” it stated.
Meanwhile, the US has stepped up immigration enforcement. A sweeping travel ban signed by President Donald Trump has taken effect. Over the weekend, protests broke out in downtown Los Angeles as demonstrators clashed with National Guard troops.
The proclamation bans nationals from 12 countries, including Afghanistan, Iran, Libya and Yemen, citing national security threats. Another seven countries face partial entry restrictions.
The White House said these measures aim to ensure better cooperation from foreign governments and to support national security, counterterrorism, and immigration enforcement.
Exceptions apply to permanent residents, existing visa holders, and select categories of travellers.
The Indian student deported incident continues to draw widespread attention, as Indian authorities seek clarity from their US counterparts.
