US Woman Files Lawsuit Against Doctor
Sharon Hayes, a 67-year-old woman from Hauser, Idaho, has filed a lawsuit against Dr. David R. Claypool, an obstetrician and gynecologist based in Spokane, Washington, alleging that he secretly used his own sperm for her artificial insemination procedure 34 years ago. This decision was made due to difficulties in conceiving with her then-husband.
In her complaint filed at the Spokane County Superior Court, Ms. Hayes expressed a preference for an anonymous donor. However, Dr. Claypool is accused of providing deceptive information, assuring her that the donor selection would be based on her specified traits like hair and eye color. He also assured that chosen donors would undergo health and genetic screenings. For each of several treatments, Dr. Claypool allegedly charged $100 in cash, claiming these funds were meant for college or medical students who were supposedly providing the sperm.

The shocking revelation came last year when Ms. Hayes’s 33-year-old daughter, Brianna Hayes, who was born from this procedure, discovered the identity of her biological father by submitting her DNA to the genetic testing and ancestry website, 23andMe. In a startling twist, Brianna learned that she had at least 16 other half-siblings in the vicinity.
It’s currently uncertain whether other women may be pursuing legal actions against Dr. Claypool. In a statement, Brianna Hayes expressed the emotional toll of the situation, saying, “It’s been an identity crisis, for sure. This was hidden from me my whole life. I felt traumatized for my mom, and the fact that I’m a product of his actions is off-putting.”

During a conversation with one of his previous patients, Dr. David R. Claypool expressed surprise, stating, “I know people are very happy. But this is the first I’ve heard of anything in 40 years.” This case highlights the ethical and legal complexities surrounding fertility treatments and the importance of transparency in such procedures.
