On Monday, a US F-16 fighter jet crashed during a training exercise in South Korea, but the pilot was rescued after making an emergency landing.

According to the report, the jet crashed into the Yellow Sea after taking off from an air base in Gunsan, 178 kilometres south of Seoul.

The South Korean defence ministry refused to comment. The United States Forces Korea, which controls American troops stationed in the South, was unable to corroborate the information immediately.

A US F-16 fighter crashed in a farmland area south of Seoul in May during a regular training exercise. The pilot ejected successfully, and there were no further injuries in the accident.

Washington is Seoul’s most important security ally, with some 28,500 troops stationed in South Korea to help safeguard it from the nuclear-armed North.

Following a fatal crash that killed eight US airmen, the US military said last week that it was halting its fleet of V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft in nearby Japan.
