On Monday, the United Nations Palestinian Refugee Agency (UNRWA) announced that over one million people have been forcibly displaced from Rafah.
UNRWA stated, “The small city on the southern edge of the Gaza Strip had been sheltering around 1 million Palestinians who fled Israeli assaults on other parts of the enclave”.
Since early May, Israel’s military has been conducting what it describes as a limited operation in Rafah to remove Hamas fighters and damage infrastructure used by the Palestinian Islamist militant group that governs Gaza.
The Israeli military has instructed citizens to travel to an expanded humanitarian zone around 20 kilometres (12 miles) away.
Many Palestinians have claimed that they are susceptible to Israeli attacks wherever they go and have been relocating to the Gaza Strip in recent months.
UNRWA reported that thousands of families are now sheltering in damaged or destroyed facilities in Khan Younis, where the agency is providing essential services despite growing challenges.
UNRWA went on to say, “Conditions are unspeakable”.
