In a move hailed as a promotion of democratic spirit, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has agreed to the demands presented by the INDIA bloc regarding the counting of postal ballots.
Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi commended the ECI for its prompt response, stating that this action sets a positive precedent in fostering democracy.
Singhvi expressed his satisfaction with the ECI’s decision. He emphasized that counting postal ballots before the official vote count holds significance.
He underscored the collaborative approach adopted by the ECI, which he believes is essential for the long-term health of democracy.
Acknowledging the ECI’s responsiveness, Singhvi extended gratitude for accommodating the demands of the INDIA bloc, especially considering the urgency of the matter amidst the backdrop of exit poll predictions favoring the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
The Election Commission, during its recent press briefing, affirmed its acceptance of all demands raised by the multi-party delegation representing the INDIA bloc.
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar assured that the concerns brought forth by the delegation have been duly addressed.
The central demand of the INDIA bloc, articulated during their meeting with the ECI on Sunday, was to prioritize the counting of postal ballots and announce their results ahead of the electronic voting machine (EVM) counting.
As exit polls overwhelmingly predict a landslide victory for the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, with projections surpassing the 350-seat mark and some even nearing 400 seats, the decision by the ECI to heed the demands of the INDIA bloc holds significant implications for the electoral process and the representation of diverse voices within it.
