Scuba divers from Turkey looked for three firefighters on Sunday after their helicopter crashed into a water reservoir in the western resort city of Izmir.

According to Agriculture and Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumakli, the helicopter crashed on Saturday night while bringing up water to put out a forest fire.

Three Kyrgyz nationals and one Turk made up the chopper crew. One of the Kyrgyz nationals was rescued and taken to the hospital in good health.

“The divers have identified the wreckage”, Yumakli stated.

“They cannot see anything clearly right now because the visibility is very low”, Yumakli continued.

Human-caused global warming is altering weather patterns and leading to a years-long drought across large swathes of Turkey.

After being ravaged by disastrous flames in 2021 that killed nine people and placed political pressure on President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey has channeled resources into its disaster response measures.

Erdogan reacted by hastening Turkey’s delayed ratification of the Paris Climate Agreements and investing in new firefighting planes and helicopters.
