US President Donald Trump confirmed he will discuss the Iran war with Chinese President Xi Jinping during their White House meeting on Thursday.
The talks will also cover trade, artificial intelligence safety and issues involving detained Americans, as Washington and Beijing seek to manage several areas of disagreement.
Xi arrived in Washington on Wednesday and was welcomed by Trump and First Lady Melania Trump at Joint Base Andrews.
The visit includes a formal state arrival ceremony on Thursday and a state dinner at the White House. The White House confirmed the schedule ahead of Xi’s visit.
Trump said on Wednesday that Iran would feature in his discussions with Xi, giving a clearer indication of the agenda after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio declined to provide details. Rubio said the two sides would discuss issues relevant to their countries and wider international concerns.
Trade remains a major focus of the meeting. Senior US and Chinese officials have already held discussions, including a meeting between US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese representatives.
Reuters reported that Washington and Beijing were also working to extend their trade truce, amid continuing tensions over tariffs, technology and market access.
US lawmakers urged Trump to seek more Chinese purchases of US farm goods and better access for American beef.
Democratic senators proposed US-China cooperation on AI safety, testing and oversight.
Rubio said Washington raises detained Americans’ cases with relevant countries. Senator Ted Budd also urged Trump to seek their release.
The meeting comes as Washington and Beijing navigate tensions involving trade, technology, Taiwan and Iran. Both governments have previously identified areas for cooperation, including economic ties and efforts to address regional security concerns.
