External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met foreign ministers from the 15-member Caribbean Community (CARICOM) in New York and discussed ways to deepen India’s engagement with Caribbean nations.
Following the meeting, Jaishankar said India sought to strengthen cooperation in economic, digital and mobility sectors.
He also highlighted the shared history and developmental challenges that underpin India’s ties with the Caribbean region.
Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, and Guyana have significant populations of Indian origin, while India shares a broader history of colonialism with other CARICOM members.
Jaishankar urged CARICOM countries to make greater use of India-provided training opportunities and offered customised programmes in areas of interest. India provides capacity-building and training programmes, particularly in digital technologies, to partner countries across the Global South.
He also reviewed India’s development assistance to Caribbean nations, including support for solar power projects. Jaishankar urged CARICOM countries to join the International Solar Alliance and the Global Biofuels Alliance, which promote renewable and alternative energy.

Jaishankar highlighted India’s support for SMEs and Quick Impact Projects, with several completed across the Caribbean.
India has also provided healthcare aid, including artificial limb camps, haemodialysis units and BHISHM Cube medical systems.
The BHISHM Cube is an Indian-developed portable medical system designed to provide healthcare support during disasters and emergencies.
The meeting forms part of India’s wider engagement with CARICOM, with discussions focusing on capacity building, technology, renewable energy, healthcare and community-oriented development.
