White House spokesperson John Kirby stated Monday that the United States has expressed its concerns to the Cuban government about Cuba hosting Chinese spy operations on its soil.
Mr. Kirby stated that the bilateral relationship with China is tight at the time, but President Joe Biden is committed to maintaining the channels of communication open.
He told a White House briefing that he did not expect recent claims of a Chinese Surveillance site in Cuba to impede Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s planned travel to China later this week.
Mr. Kirby told to media, “We understand the bilateral relationship with China is tense right now, and nothing’s changed about the fact that the president wants to keep the lines of communication open with the PRC”.
US media reported last week that U.S. officials had learned of a new Chinese spying operation against Cuba.
China denied on Monday that it was using Cuba as a spying base.
Mr. Blinken said that China’s initiatives in Cuba were part of Beijing’s worldwide ambition to expand its presence overseas, but that United States moves since Biden took office in January 2021 have slowed down this effort.
