Taiwanese Drag Queens with President Tsai Ing-wen
Nymphia Wind, Taiwanese drag queen, and winner of the hit TV series ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ sang a rousing medley of songs for outgoing President Tsai Ing-wen, thanking her for being the island’s mother.
During Tsai’s two stints in office, her Democratic Progressive Party was a major supporter of social issues, particularly LGBTQ rights, and the island became the first in Asia to legalize homosexual marriage in 2019.
Tsai will step down as president on Monday with that accomplishment, as well as having been Taiwan’s first female president, two milestones that Nymphia Wind tearfully highlighted in a speech Wednesday at the presidential office.
“Thank you so much for your eight years of dedication, for becoming Taiwan’s mother”, the Taiwanese-American drag queen thanked.
The first East Asian winner of ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ performed three songs at the presidential office’s main entrance, the first by Taiwanese vocalist Huang Fei, and then ‘Marry the Night’ by Lady Gaga.
Nymphia Wind was joined by five other Taiwanese drag queens for the last performance, where they danced and lipsynced to pop star Jolin Tsai’s LGBTQ-centred song ‘Womxnly’, which features the lyrics ‘Never let anyone change who you are’.
