Milan Malpensa Airport
Transport Minister Matteo Salvini announced on Friday that Milan Malpensa Airport will be renamed after former Italian prime minister and business magnate Silvio Berlusconi.
Berlusconi, who died last year aged 86, was one of Italy’s most divisive figures of modern times, having led four governments with his centre-right Forza Italia party.
Speaking at a conference in southern Italy, Salvini said that the civil aviation authority has approved a request by the Lombardy region around Milan to rename Malpensa airport after Berlusconi, who hailed from the country’s financial capital.
“Seeing as the final decision rests with the transport minister, I really think it will go ahead”, said Salvini, leader of the right-wing League party and a long-time Berlusconi supporter.
Later, Matteo Salvini tweeted, “Good news: Milan Malpensa Airport will be named after Silvio Berlusconi”, through his official ‘X’ handle.
“Just today the board of directors of ENAC (National Civil Aviation Authority) approved the request made by the Lombardy Region one year ago”, Salvini continued in his tweet.
Salvini went on to say, “The final decision lies with the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport and I am ready to put the last signature, with pride and emotion, in the memory of my friend Silvio, a great entrepreneur, a great Milanese and a great Italian. Always with us.”
