The death toll from floods in northern China’s Hebei province has increased to 29, following record-breaking rains in the region in recent weeks.
According to authorities, as of August 10, 29 people had died as a result of disasters in Hebei Province, six of whom had previously gone missing. At least 16 people are still missing.
Authorities confirmed earlier this week that at least 33 people perished in Beijing as a result of strong rainfall and floods that struck at the end of last month, including two rescue personnel.
In addition, nearly a dozen people were killed in northeastern Jilin province last week as a result of torrential rain.
On Wednesday, streets in portions of Hebei, which borders the capital, were still caked in mud.
Residents in the area were scrambling to collect soggy possessions and clean up damaged homes.
Millions of people have been affected by extreme weather events and prolonged heatwaves in recent weeks around the globe, which scientists say are being exacerbated by climate change.
