On Sunday(local time), the ruling populists in Serbia declared a resounding victory in the parliamentary election, which was clouded by allegations of significant irregularities during the heated campaign and on election day.
Acting Prime Minister Ana Brnabic stated that the ruling Serbian Progressive Party projected to win 47% of the vote and hold about 130 seats in the 250-member assembly after half of the votes were counted. According to Brnabic, the main opposition party, Serbia Against Violence, received about 23% of the vote.
The Serbian Progressives led by President Aleksandar Vucic and the centrist coalition, which aimed to unseat the populists in charge of the unstable Balkan state since 2012, were the main contestants in the parliamentary and local elections.
Analysts predicted that the opposition alliance Serbia Against Violence would be the biggest challenge for Belgrade’s city council, which would severely undermine Vucic’s strict rule over the nation.
Vucic said that coalition talks following the election would decide who leads Belgrade, he stated that his party was also leading in the capital.
Vucic exclaimed, “This is an absolute victory which makes me extremely happy,” at the Belgrade headquarters of his party. “We are aware of our accomplishments from the past and the difficult times that lie ahead.”
