The emergency situations ministry reported that an explosion and fire at a petrol station in the Russian province of Dagestan in the Caucasus resulted in at least 12 fatalities and several injuries on Monday.
“More than 60 people were injured in the fire in Makhachkala, and 12 of them died”, the ministry said on Telegram. Dagestan’s capital is Makhachkala, which is located on the Caspian Sea.
The fire reportedly started in a parking lot and spread to the gas station.
“After the explosion, everything fell on our heads, and we couldn’t see anything anymore”, the unidentified witness explained.
The Ria Novosti news agency posted a video on Telegram showing flames rising from a structure, followed by a massive explosion.
According to the ministry, the fire extended over 600 square metres (6,450 square feet), and 260 firefighters were sent.
