Russia’s defence ministry announced Friday that a Ukrainian drone strike in the Moscow region had been foiled overnight.

“The UAV was destroyed by means of air defence”, the ministry stated on Telegram, adding that no one was hurt or damaged.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin had already announced the attack, without naming the place.

On Telegram, he wrote, “An enemy drone attack attempt was made”.

The attempted strike came only days after Ukraine claimed responsibility for a drone attack in central Moscow.

On Monday, a drone crashed near the Russian defence ministry in Moscow’s centre, and another struck an office building in a southern district.

Until three drone assaults this year, Moscow and its surrounds, which are around 500 kilometres (310 miles) from the Ukrainian border, were rarely targeted.

Two drones were shot down above the Kremlin in early May.

Later this month, drone attacks targeted Moscow high-rises.

Russia announced earlier this month that it has shot down five Ukrainian drones that interfering with the operation of Moscow’s Vnukovo international airport.

The drone attacks on Moscow come after many weeks of a Ukrainian counter-offensive to reclaim territory lost to Moscow since large-scale hostilities erupted in February 2022.
