Prime Minister Narendra Modi described his two-day official visit to Japan as ‘productive’, highlighting a series of major outcomes aimed at strengthening the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.

His remarks followed the Ministry of External Affairs’ (MEA) release of the official list of outcomes from the high-level meetings held in Tokyo between 29 and 30 August.

According to the MEA, the visit produced wide-ranging agreements within the framework of the Special Strategic and Global Partnership.
At the forefront was the adoption of the ‘India-Japan Joint Vision for the Next Decade’. The document sets a ten-year roadmap for cooperation across priority sectors. These include:
- Economy,
- Mobility,
- Technology,
- Sustainability,
- Health, and
- Sub-national partnerships
India and Japan elevated their security ties with a ‘Joint Declaration on Security Cooperation’. The declaration seeks to boost defence collaboration and address regional as well as global security challenges.
The visit also witnessed the unveiling of an ‘Action Plan for Human Resource Exchange’. The plan will facilitate the movement of 500,000 individuals to Japan over the next five years, including 50,000 skilled Indian workers.
Among other key agreements were a ‘Memorandum of Cooperation on the Joint Crediting Mechanism’, supporting India’s climate goals, and a new ‘India-Japan Digital Partnership 2.0’, centred on digital public infrastructure, AI, semiconductors, and IoT.
A significant step in space collaboration was formalised through an arrangement between ‘ISRO and JAXA’ on the Chandrayaan-5 lunar mission.
Further initiatives announced included the ‘India-Japan AI Initiative’, the ‘Next-Generation Mobility Partnership’, and the ‘Sustainable Fuel Initiative’, alongside measures to strengthen supply chain resilience under the ‘Economic Security Initiative’.
Japan has also announced a private investment target of JPY 10 trillion in India over the next decade. Both sides agreed to intensify regional cooperation through multiple initiatives:
- Promoting state-prefecture partnerships,
- Encouraging high-level reciprocal visits, and
- Establishing regional business forums, particularly in the Kansai and Kyushu regions
The MEA concluded that the outcomes of the visit mark a substantial advance in bilateral relations, cementing cooperation in technology, sustainability, economic growth, and strategic partnership.
