On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Mahatma Gandhi Centre at Tashkent State University of Oriental Studies, where he met Indologists and students and signed the visitors’ book.
The visit highlighted the cultural and academic links between India and Uzbekistan during PM Modi’s two-day State Visit to the Central Asian country.
Earlier, PM Modi paid homage to former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri at the Shastri Memorial in Tashkent.
Lal Bahadur Shastri served as India’s Prime Minister from June 9, 1964, to January 11, 1966, and is remembered for the slogan ‘Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan’.
PM Modi’s cultural engagements followed extensive talks with Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev at the Presidential Palace.
The discussions covered a wide range of areas, including trade, investment, infrastructure, critical minerals, mining, defence, security, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, IT, digital public infrastructure and education.
President Mirziyoyev presented PM Modi with Uzbekistan’s highest honour, the ‘Oliy Darajali Do’stlik’ Order, recognising his contribution to strengthening ties between the two nations.
The leaders underlined their environmental partnership by jointly planting a tree under India’s ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative and Uzbekistan’s ‘Yashil Makon’ campaign.
PM Modi had received a ceremonial welcome from President Mirziyoyev after arriving in Tashkent on Saturday.
The Prime Minister had earlier attended a yoga session featuring 52 practitioners from Uzbekistan.
The Uzbekistan visit forms part of PM Modi’s two-nation tour. He will travel to Kyrgyzstan after completing his Tashkent engagements for a two-day visit, during which he is likely to attend the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit and the opening ceremony of the 6th World Nomad Games.
