On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Shastri Memorial in Tashkent and paid tribute to former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, recalling his enduring contribution to India.
PM Modi said Lal Bahadur Shastri was a ‘towering statesman’ whose dedication to the nation continues to inspire generations.
Lal Bahadur Shastri served as India’s Prime Minister from June 9, 1964, until January 11, 1966. He is remembered for giving the country the slogan ‘Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan’.
The memorial visit formed part of PM Modi’s engagements during his two-day State Visit to Uzbekistan.
Earlier, PM Modi held talks with President Shavkat Mirziyoyev at the Kuksaroy Residence, with both sides discussing ways to expand cooperation in trade, investment, industry, interregional ties and culture.
The visit has produced several significant outcomes.
Uzbekistan conferred its highest honour, the ‘Oliy Darajali Do’stlik’ Order, on PM Modi for his contribution to strengthening friendship between the two countries.
The two leaders further highlighted their environmental cooperation by planting a tree at the Presidential Palace under India’s ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative and Uzbekistan’s ‘Yashil Makon’ campaign.
PM Modi’s programme in Tashkent has included cultural and people-to-people engagements as well. He witnessed a yoga demonstration involving 52 practitioners from Uzbekistan during his visit.
The Prime Minister’s Uzbekistan trip is part of a wider two-nation tour.
After completing his engagements in Tashkent, PM Modi will likely travel to Kyrgyzstan to attend the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit.
The visit comes as India and Uzbekistan have elevated their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, with both sides seeking to expand cooperation across strategic, economic and cultural areas.
