India’s Long-Term Commitment To BIMSTEC
Though BIMSTEC was founded in 1997, its strategic direction shifted significantly in 2016 when PM Modi hosted a leaders’ retreat in Goa alongside the BRICS Summit.
That moment marked a turning point in India’s commitment to the group’s growth and cohesion.
Since then, India’s consistent efforts have helped BIMSTEC evolve into a vibrant regional platform.
In 2019, PM Modi invited BIMSTEC leaders to his swearing-in ceremony – further emphasizing India’s regional commitment.
From enhancing cross-border energy cooperation through the BIMSTEC Energy Centre in Bengaluru to leading disaster response efforts like Operation Brahma in the aftermath of Myanmar’s 7.7-magnitude quake, India has emerged as a first responder and proactive regional partner.
PM Modi’s action plan, however unveiled in Bangkok, reinforces India’s central role in BIMSTEC’s evolution – charting a course for regional integration driven by shared prosperity, resilience, and sustainable development.
