Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet Bhutan’s Fourth King and attend the Kalachakra ceremony on Wednesday before returning to New Delhi, concluding a visit that reaffirms India’s commitment to its Neighbourhood First Policy.
On Tuesday, PM Modi held extensive talks with Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, focusing on enhancing cooperation in areas such as energy, capacity building, technology, defence, and security.
The discussions reflected both nations’ shared vision for sustainable development and regional stability.
Following the high-level meeting, the two leaders jointly inaugurated the 1020 MW Punatsangchhu-II hydroelectric project, a flagship collaboration that marks a milestone in India-Bhutan energy cooperation.
“Had a very good meeting with His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, the King of Bhutan. We covered the full range of India-Bhutan relations,” Prime Minister Modi shared on social media, reaffirming that “India is proud to be a key partner in Bhutan’s development journey.”
Prime Minister Modi and the Bhutanese King also visited the Tashichhodzong monastery in Thimphu to seek blessings from the Holy Relics of Lord Buddha, enshrined at the Grand Kuenrey Hall.
The sacred relics were sent from India as a special gesture to commemorate the 70th birth anniversary of Bhutan’s Fourth King and the Global Peace Prayer Festival, symbolising the deep spiritual and cultural bonds between the two nations.
The Kalachakra ceremony — one of the most revered Buddhist rituals — reflects the enduring cultural connection between India and Bhutan.
By attending the ceremony, PM Modi reaffirmed India’s respect for Bhutan’s spiritual traditions and its commitment to promoting peace and harmony across the region.
India and Bhutan share a unique partnership built on trust, goodwill, and mutual respect. Over the years, New Delhi and Thimphu have deepened collaboration across multiple sectors, including hydropower, digital infrastructure, education, and skill development.
The newly inaugurated Punatsangchhu-II project is expected to strengthen Bhutan’s role as a major exporter of clean energy while supporting India’s transition towards sustainable power sources.
Defence and security cooperation also featured prominently in the discussions, with both sides reaffirming their shared commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the Himalayan region.
During his visit, Prime Minister Modi participated in events marking the 70th birth anniversary of Bhutan’s Fourth King, whose leadership has shaped modern Bhutan’s democratic and developmental trajectory.
PM Modi’s presence at these celebrations underscored India’s admiration for Bhutan’s progress and its role as a model of balanced development and environmental stewardship.
As Prime Minister Modi concludes his visit, the India-Bhutan partnership stands stronger than ever.
The two-day visit not only reinforced strategic and cultural ties but also charted a roadmap for future cooperation in clean energy, digital connectivity, and youth empowerment.
The shared vision of both nations — rooted in spirituality, sustainability, and mutual respect — continues to guide their journey towards a prosperous and peaceful Himalayan region.
