Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Kazan, Russia, on Tuesday to participate in the 16th BRICS Summit, invited by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The summit is themed “Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security.” It will serve as an important platform for world leaders to address key global issues.
In his departure statement, PM Modi emphasized India’s commitment to BRICS. He noted, “India values the close cooperation within BRICS, which has emerged as an important platform for dialogue on issues such as the global developmental agenda, climate change, and economic cooperation.” He also highlighted that the expansion of BRICS last year has enhanced its inclusivity and agenda for global good.
Modi’s visit aims to reinforce the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia. He expressed his anticipation of meeting other BRICS leaders during the summit.
Aside from participating in the summit, the Prime Minister plans to hold bilateral meetings with counterparts from other BRICS nations and invited leaders. These discussions will focus on current global and regional issues, as well as three main areas of cooperation outlined by the Russian chairmanship: politics and security, economics and finance, and cultural and humanitarian contacts.

Particular attention will be given to the potential expansion of BRICS, including the establishment of a new category for partner states. Additionally, reports from the chairman of the New Development Bank, the Business Council, the Interbank Cooperation Mechanism, and the Women’s Business Alliance will be presented during the summit.
The outcomes of the discussions will be summarized in the Kazan Summit Declaration.
On Wednesday, an outreach meeting in the ‘BRICS plus’ format will include representatives from nearly 40 countries, including leaders from the CIS, Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America, along with heads of various international organizations.
According to the Kremlin, discussions will focus on pressing international issues, particularly the escalating situation in the Middle East, and how BRICS countries can collaborate with the Global South for sustainable development.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with nearly all leaders attending the summit.
