Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit held in Tianjin, China, on 31 August. This marked a continuation of diplomatic engagement between the two nations following their previous meeting in Kazan, Russia, in 2024.
The leaders reviewed progress on key issues and expressed commitment to deepening bilateral relations.
The meeting centred around the importance of peace along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), with both leaders acknowledging the successful disengagement achieved in 2024.
PM Modi reiterated that peace and tranquillity in border areas remain essential for the sustainable development of India-China relations.
The leaders agreed on the need to enhance people-to-people ties, with proposals including the facilitation of direct flights, relaxed visa regimes and the continuation of religious pilgrimages such as the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.
Both sides underlined that cultural and social exchanges are vital to building mutual trust and understanding.
Economic issues were also addressed, with both countries recognising the role of India and China in stabilising global trade.
The leaders agreed to expand trade and investment ties, work towards reducing trade imbalance and foster a more predictable business environment.
PM Modi urged viewing India-China relations through the lens of strategic autonomy, free from third-party influence.
The two leaders acknowledged the positive steps taken by their Special Representatives (SRs) on the boundary question and pledged support for ongoing discussions.
They reaffirmed their commitment to a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable resolution based on long-term bilateral interests.
PM Modi extended support to China’s current SCO Presidency and invited President Xi to the BRICS Summit that India will host in 2026.
President Xi thanked PM Modi for the invitation and expressed China’s support for India’s leadership in the upcoming BRICS summit.
The Tianjin meeting marks a significant step towards normalising relations after years of tension.
Moreover, with improved communication channels and shared goals in trade and diplomacy, the leaders’ dialogue reflects a broader vision for cooperation in a multipolar Asia.
