PM Modi Praises Bihar’s ‘Solar Didi’ For Transforming Her Village Through Solar Energy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday narrated the inspiring story of Devki, popularly known as Bihar’s ‘Solar Didi’, who transformed her village in Muzaffarpur with the help of solar pumps that improved irrigation and increased farmers’ income.

He urged people across the country to adopt solar panels and make full use of the abundant solar energy available in India.

Speaking during the 125th episode of his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat, the Prime Minister said, “These days you often see solar panels shining on rooftops, buildings, and government offices. People now understand its importance and are adopting it openly. Our country is blessed by the Sun God, so why not harness his energy to the fullest?”

Solar Energy Changing Rural Livelihoods

PM Modi highlighted the role of solar energy in reshaping rural life. He said solar power is helping farmers achieve better results with the same hard work. Solar pumps and solar rice mills have increased agricultural output and boosted incomes.

He added that hundreds of solar rice mills are now operating in different states, benefiting farmers and brightening their lives.

Sharing Devki’s journey, the Prime Minister said she had faced hardships, with a small farm, four children, and no clear future. After joining a self-help group, she learned about solar pumps and worked to bring one to her village. The effort paid off, and she soon became known as ‘Solar Didi’.

Solar Didi Inspires Farmers and Gains Respect

PM Modi said Devki’s solar pump now irrigates more than 40 acres of farmland. Other farmers in her village joined her efforts, leading to greener crops and higher incomes. He praised her for embracing digital transactions.

Devki now receives payments through UPI, earning respect across the village.

The Prime Minister said her hard work proved solar energy is more than electricity—it is a new power bringing light and prosperity to villages.

During the broadcast, PM Modi also paid tribute to engineer M Visvesvaraya on his birth anniversary, celebrated as Engineers’ Day on 15 September. He called engineers karmayogis who turn dreams into reality.

PM Modi further noted the upcoming Vishwakarma Jayanti on 17 September and highlighted the Vishwakarma Yojana, launched to support carpenters, blacksmiths, potters, sculptors, and other traditional artisans.

He said these communities have long been the foundation of India’s prosperity.
