Over 50 injured and 35 dead in an Egypt traffic accident

A horrific collision involving a bus and several cars on an Egyptian highway on Saturday killed at least 35 people and injured more than 50 others.

Traffic accidents are widespread in Egypt, where roads are typically in poor condition and the traffic code is routinely ignored.

“A horrific collision on the Cairo-Alexandria desert road near Wadi al-Natrun led to the death of 35 people, at least 18 of whom burnt to death”, stated Al-Ahram, adding that at least 53 were injured.

Social media images showed an overturned lorry lying across the fast lane on a burned tarmac.

Further on, there is at least one bus and a minibus, both extensively destroyed by fire, as well as numerous cars, some of which are still burning.

Crowds of people can be seen gathered beside the road, staring at the crash site as dense black smoke rises into the air.

According to official estimates, 7,000 people died in road accidents in the Arab world’s most populated country in 2021.
