Authorities stated a flaming crash between a double-decker bus and a truck killed 19 people and injured 22 in northwestern Mexico on Tuesday.
“Nineteen lifeless bodies have been counted,” said Sara Quinonez, attorney general of Sinaloa state, adding that identifying the remains will take time.
Officials were spotted checking the burned wreckage of the passenger bus, that had been traveling from the city of Guadalajara in the western state of Jalisco to Los Mochis in Sinaloa.
Roy Navarrete, Sinaloa’s director of civil protection, stated at a press conference that the truck and the bus, which were carrying approximately 50 passengers, hit head-on before taking fire.
Deadly road accidents are common in Mexico, generally caused by high speeds, poor vehicle conditions, or driver weariness. Accidents involving good vehicles have also increased on the countries’s roadways.
At least 29 people lost their lives in July 2023 when a passenger bus in the southern state of Oaxaca veered off a mountain road and plummeted into a ravine.
Road crashes are a main cause of mortality for migrants making the perilous journey overland to the United States.
