Malawi’s late vice president, Saulos Chilima
Authorities stated that a vehicle in the convoy of Malawi’s late vice president’s funeral procession slammed into mourners at a village on Sunday night, killing four and injuring 12.
It was part of a procession carrying the body of Saulos Chilima, who was killed in a plane crash earlier this week.
The vehicle plunged into a throng in Ntcheu a village in central Malawi.
The car, along with the other military, police, and civilian vehicles, was on its way to Chilima’s home village of Nsipe, 180 kilometres (110 miles) south of the capital Lilongwe, for his funeral on Monday, which has been proclaimed a public holiday.
In a statement, police said, “Due to the impact the two female and two male pedestrians sustained severe head injuries and multiple fractures and died whilst receiving treatment”.
Thousands of mourners lined the streets to see the vice president’s casket.
According to the report, the vehicle collided with the throng while attempting to maneuver away from the volatile crowd.
