US President Joe Biden said Monday that he is considering additional sanctions against Moscow following the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny in an Arctic prison.

“We already have sanctions, but we are considering additional sanctions, yes”, said Biden, who had previously publicly blamed Russian President Vladimir Putin and his thugs for Navalny’s death in a press conference in Washington.

Biden and other Western partners have already employed extraordinary sanctions to stifle support for Moscow’s conflict in Ukraine, while simultaneously providing Kyiv with weapons and help.

But Russia has weathered the initial shock and put its economy on a war footing, boosting production and recruiting while imprisoning critics of the invasion.

Meanwhile, doubts have grown about Washington’s future commitment to Ukraine. With existing United States funding substantially depleted, former President Donald Trump’s friends in the House of Representatives have stalled $60 billion in fresh military aid.

Ukraine’s military is outnumbered and weary, and Europe cannot scale up weaponry supply sufficiently quickly without the United States, emphasizing the importance of providing further financing to Kyiv.

Biden criticized Republicans again Monday for failing to enact the relief package.

“The way they’re walking away from the threat of Russia, the way they’re walking away from NATO, the way they’re walking away from meeting our obligations, it’s just shocking”, the US president continued.
