A meteorological office official said on Tuesday that Japan has withdrawn all the tsunami warnings and advisories issued following a massive earthquake on New Year’s Day.
According to the official, small variations in tidal level are still possible, a day after a powerful quake in central Japan triggered tsunami waves up to a metre high.
Several serve jolts were detected early Tuesday. The 7.5-magnitude quake, which struck Ishikawa prefecture on Honshu’s main island, unleashed tsunami waves more than a metre high, collapsed buildings, started a large fire and ripped roads apart.
Japanese rescuers raced against the clock and severe aftershocks to locate survivors.
As daylight broke, the scale of the destruction on the Noto Peninsula became clear, with buildings still on fire, residences crushed, fishing boats sunk or washed ashore, and highways damaged by landslides.
As per the local energy supplier, about 45,000 households were without power in the region. Many cities were without water.
