On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India and Uzbekistan have upgraded their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, marking a significant step in bilateral ties.
PM Modi made the announcement in Tashkent after Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev presented him with the country’s highest honour, the ‘Oliy Darajali Do’stlik’ Order, for his contribution to strengthening relations between the two nations.
The Prime Minister credited President Mirziyoyev’s leadership and friendship with India for the steady progress in ties. He said the relationship had reached a new level as both countries continued to expand their cooperation.
PM Modi described the Uzbek honour as a recognition not just for him but for India’s 1.4 billion people.
Accepting the award, PM Modi linked the word ‘Dostlik’, meaning friendship, with the longstanding bond between the two countries. He dedicated the distinction to the centuries-old friendship and shared heritage of India and Uzbekistan, while expressing gratitude to the Uzbek government, President Mirziyoyev and the people of the country.
PM Modi said the award had brought both pride and a greater sense of responsibility. He assured Uzbekistan that India would remain committed to strengthening the friendship between the two countries.
The Prime Minister said India and Uzbekistan would work together to represent the interests of the Global South. He pledged that both nations would continue their efforts towards the welfare of developing countries and contribute to broader efforts aimed at improving the well-being of humanity.
The elevation to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership comes during PM Modi’s two-day visit to Uzbekistan, where he held delegation-level talks with President Mirziyoyev on expanding cooperation across several areas.
