On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described Uzbekistan as a key pillar of India’s engagement with Central Asia and said both countries share similar priorities centred on youth, innovation, technology and inclusive development.
Speaking alongside Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in Tashkent, PM Modi said the two nations would deepen defence cooperation through direct industry linkages, co-production and joint development.
The Prime Minister said India and Uzbekistan share a firm commitment to countering terrorism, extremism and separatism, adding that their expanding defence and security cooperation reflects strong mutual trust.
PM Modi noted that 2026 marks 15 years of the India-Uzbekistan strategic partnership. The two countries have now upgraded their ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Economic cooperation featured prominently in the talks, with PM Modi saying bilateral trade has crossed $1 billion.
India and Uzbekistan have, however, set a target of taking trade to $5 billion by 2030 through greater market access, improved connectivity and stronger banking and payment links.
The Prime Minister said the two sides would pursue cooperation in infrastructure and traditional medicine, with recently concluded agreements expected to strengthen collaboration in these areas.
Prime Minister Modi stressed the need to take bilateral cooperation beyond the national capitals.
India and Uzbekistan have therefore decided to establish partnerships between cities and states to promote direct exchanges in urban development, industry, education, tourism and culture.
PM Modi thanked President Mirziyoyev and the Uzbek people for the warm reception during his fourth visit to the country. He praised the Uzbek leader’s friendship, vision and continued commitment to strengthening relations with India.
The Prime Minister said the shared vision of ‘Yangi Uzbekistan’ and ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ would guide efforts to improve the lives of people in both countries.
