The kingdom’s railway administration reported that a goods train struck a pick-up truck that was attempting to cross the track on Friday, killing eight persons.
The accident occurred around 2:20 a.m. (1920 GMT Thursday) at an unapproved crossing in Chachoengsao province, east of Bangkok, according to a statement from the State Railway of Thailand.
The statement claimed that the train driver honked his horn as he approached the crossing but was unable to stop in time to avoid striking the truck carrying fish.
“The train driver followed protocol by sounding the alarm three times, but the close proximity made it difficult for the driver to stop the train in time”, the statement continued.
The collision killed eight people, five males, and three women.
Four additional people were hurt, one of them is in critical condition at the hospital.
Thailand frequently leads lists of the world’s most dangerous roads, with speeding, intoxicated driving, and lax law enforcement all contributing reasons.
In October 2020, a goods train collided with a bus carrying passengers to a religious occasion, killing 18 people.
